Silk and the Samurai Sword

What could an ancient sword making technique and modern day uses of silk have in common? Quite a bit actaully..The ancient art of sword making in renaissance Japan was a long and arduous one. Even by today’s technology, masters of making these swords still use ancient techniques. The makers of the steel use a process in which they must stay awake for three days in order to carefully observe and tend to the steel being made. Similarly, the uses of silk in modern technology rely on a form of tradition, similar to that of “spinning silk.” Silk today, as seen in the TED presentation, can be used for medical, commercial, and technological uses as it is made completely of proteins, making it edible, biodegradable, and posing no harm to the human body.
